Safe chemistry
LFP is thermally more stable than battery types containing nickel and cobalt. The risk of overheating is lower – an important property on a construction site with impacts, vibration and heat.
SANY × CATL · Electric construction machines
SANY develops electric construction machines together with CATL – the world's largest manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage. The result is machines with lower operating costs, zero local emissions and significantly less noise.
The partnership
In 2020, SANY and CATL entered into a strategic partnership on new energy. The collaboration covers electric excavators, cranes, concrete machinery, mining machinery, port machinery and heavy trucks – as well as joint development of data solutions for monitoring battery health and automatic fault diagnosis.
CATL was founded in 2011 and is headquartered in Ningde, China. Today it is the world's largest manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage, with a global market share of around 37 %, and it has battery production in Europe.
The battery technology
LFP is thermally more stable than battery types containing nickel and cobalt. The risk of overheating is lower – an important property on a construction site with impacts, vibration and heat.
LFP batteries withstand many full charge and discharge cycles, so the battery lasts for many years of daily operation.
SANY states more than 2,800 full cycles for the SW956E and SW978E and 3,500–5,000 charge cycles for the SY19E and SY215E.
The batteries can be fast-charged via CCS2, so the machine can be topped up during the lunch break.
SY215E: 10–80 % in 30 min. SW956E: 15–93 % in approx. 60 min. at 2 × 150 kW.
The SW956E and SW978E wheel loaders have liquid-cooled battery packs that keep the temperature stable – summer and winter.
LFP chemistry uses iron and phosphate instead of cobalt and nickel – raw materials that are more expensive and more controversial.
The large electric machines are designed for a normal working day on a single charge.
SANY states 6–8 hours of continuous operation for the SY215E, SW956E and SW978E.
The benefits
Electricity is typically cheaper than diesel per unit of work done, and an electric motor wastes far less energy as heat.
SANY states over 30 % lower energy costs for the SY215E and approx. 30 % lower energy consumption for the SY19E.
No engine oil, fuel filters, particulate filter or AdBlue – and fewer wearing parts in the driveline.
SANY states over 50 % lower maintenance costs for the SY215E and approx. 80 % for the SY19E.
Work close to homes, schools and hospitals with far less disturbance for neighbours – and a calmer working day in the cab.
SY215E: 70 dB(A). SY35E: 68 dB(A) in the cab.
No exhaust, particulates or NOx on site. That means a better working environment and makes the machines suitable indoors, in basements and in tunnels.
An electric motor delivers its full torque from the very first revolution. That gives fast response and precise control.
Public clients increasingly require emission-free machines. With an electric machine you can bid on these jobs – including those with stricter requirements.
Requirements in public tenders
City of Copenhagen
From 1 July 2027, all non-road machinery under 8 tonnes must be emission-free on all of the Technical and Environmental Administration's own construction projects. At the same time, the city's bonus scheme for machines up to 8 tonnes expires.
Including the municipalities of Copenhagen, Aarhus, Aalborg, Odense, Esbjerg and Frederiksberg, the Copenhagen Metro company and the Capital Region of Denmark, they will require emission-free non-road machinery in their tenders – and together they will order at least 1,000 new emission-free machines by 2028 (Grønt Gearskifte).
On the City of Oslo's own construction projects, contractors must use emission-free machines. Sustainable biodiesel is only permitted where zero emissions are not possible – fossil fuels are not permitted. In 2024, 85 % of the machines' energy consumption on the city's sites was already emission-free.
Applies to all non-road machinery under 8 tonnes on the administration's own construction projects.
The City of Oslo has put out for consultation a proposal for requirements on all larger construction sites – both public and private: 30 % zero-emission energy or biogas, rising to 90 % in 2030. The proposal has not yet been adopted.
The requirements apply to the named clients' own projects. Always check the specific requirements in the tender documents – we are happy to help you find the right machine.
SANY's European range

Power for the construction site
AE Maskiner's high-speed charging solutions in containers from 36 kWh to 4,624 kWh charge electric construction machines where there is no access to the grid – and can also be used as a site power supply.
Figures for savings, noise, charging times and batteries are the manufacturer's own data from SANY Europe. Actual savings depend on use and on electricity and diesel prices.
